Delegation for Iran
PA Auckland . Meat industry leaders are expected to arrive in Iran this week, to tie up the 1982 lamb contract.
The four-man delegation is optimistic that this year’s deal will be settled in the next few days. The chairman of the Meat Board, Mr Adam Begg, has said that the Iranians are unlikely to take more than 70,000 tonnes this year, compared with 107,000 tonnes last year. Other industry sources said the figure could be as low as 50,000 tonnes. Negotiations have been delayed because of hold-ups in payment for the final shipments last year, and a big sale this late in the season could put severe pressure on halal slaughtering facilities.
The four-man team is Mr Norman Mcßae, deputy chairman of the Meat Board, Mr Darcy Freeman, the board’s general manager, Mr Eric Cammell, chairman of the Meat Marketing Corporation, which supervises the Iranian contract for the industry; and Mr Brian Freeman, marketing manager of Borthwicks.
