Farrant wins promotion for Auckland clash
David Farrant. the young Burnside-West University allrounder, has been included in the Canterbury team of 12 for its next Shell Trophy cricket match against Auckland, which starts on Saturday.
Omitted from the team that lost to Otago earlier this week are Dave Dempsey and Richard Leggat. Farrant has batted ably for Canterbury B this season and is a useful medium-pace bowler with a whippy action. He is also an excellent fieldsman.
Dempsey, who scored two centuries last season and finished fourth of the Canterbury batsmen in the firstclass averages — 471 runs at 36.2 — has not had such a profitable return in his five three-day matches this season.
A 63 against Wellington has been his only half-cen-tury and from 10 innings he has made only 190. Even so, the absence of Dempsey and his cavalier approach will remove some character from the Canterbury team. Leggat, for~ all his brilli-
ance in the field, did not have much success with the bat against Otago and his five overs brought no rewards. Glenn Bateman also returns to the side. The team, which will practise at Lancaster Park at 5.30 p.m. this evening, is: Cran Bull. David Stead, Peter Rattray, Paul McEwan, David Boyle, Rod Latham. Richard Hadlee, David Farrant. Tony Farrant, Ashley Hart, Steve McNally, and Glenn Bateman,
Vaughan Brown, Bryan Ritchie, and John Mackie were not considered because of injury. Richard Hadlee. who bowled in some discomfort at Carisbrook last Tuesday, has had treatment for a recurrence of an ankle injury and he expects to be fit for Saturday.
It was also announced yesterday that no club cricket will be played in the Canterbury Cricket Association’s
competitions on February 6 because of a clash with the Shell Cup final between Wellington and Canterbury at Lancaster Park.
A special meeting of the association’s management committee has decided unanimously to wipe club matches on the Saturday and play selected grades on February 7.
“We want to give the Canterbury team full support and are hoping for a good crowd." said the chairman of the management committee. Mr Alby Duckmanton. Mr Duckmanton said that the “selected grades" would probably be the two-day grades, but that decision would be up to the competitions committee.
The one-day grades will possibly play instead on March 6, the Saturday of the match between Australia and the President’s XI at Christchurch. Those players affected would still have’ the Friday and Sunday to watch the cricket.
