Govt ‘has promoted communism’

No Government had done more to promote the cause of communism in New Zealand than the present Government, the member of Parliament for Yaldhurst, Mr M. A. Connelly (Lab.), has said.

He was commenting on the criticism by the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) of New Zealand trade unionists planning to visit Cuba for a World Federation of Trade Unions conference.

Through its economic and social policies, the Government had boosted communism and ensured the election of Mr K. G. Douglas, the Federation of Labour’s secretary, a member of the Mos-

cow-aiigned Socialist Unity Party, Mr Connelly said. Those policies had allowed large-scale unemployment, business collapse, deteriorating social : conditions, and industrial problems. “Communism breeds on depressed economic. and social conditions,” Mr Connelly said, “and the sooner the public of New Zealand wake up to that, the better.” People genuinely opposed to communism in New Zealand should work through the Labour Party, he said. The party promoted full employment, expanding business opportunities, and social justice, and was committed to parliamentary democracy.
