Official report and prices

Values for crossbred wools were from steady to dearer on the first day of the Christchurch January sale yesterday, according to the official report issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers' Association in conjunction with the Wool Board and the New Zealand Woolbuyers' Association. In contrast, the finer wools were from steady to easier compared with the last sale of similar wools.

Compared with the sale at Wanganui last Friday, fine and medium crossbred wools were 2*4 per cent dearer and crossbred lambs’ wool in sellers' favour. Strong crossbred fleece, crossbred second-shear and crossbred skirtings and oddments were unchanged.

The finer wools were compared with the Dunedin sale on December 18 and in that case Halfbred skirtings and oddments were from par to 2 v z per cent cheaper. Strong Halbred fleece irregular and inclined in buyers’ favour. Extra fine, fine and medium Halfbred were firm on Dunedin rates.

The report said that competition was fairly general on Halfbred and fine crossbred fleece, but more restricted on coarse crossbred fleece. The main buyers were China and Japan, with support from Western Europe. The Wool Board gave moderate support to the market by bidding on 6169 bales, or 27.4 per cent of the offering, and having 1345 bales (5.9 per cent) either sold or passed to it. The ottering for the first day of the two-day sale consisted of 22.475 bales drawn from the Canterbury plains. Marlborough, Nelson arid the West Coast, and included a wide selection of types. Halfbred and Corriedale fleece predominated and these wools varied considerably in style. There were quite a number of attractive lots, but the bulk showed the results of the autumn conditions and were tender and cotted. Some were of good style and colour but heavy in condition.

A small quantity of lambs' wool was offered, but although of quite good colour it was very short and not a true indication of the main quantities which will be offered at later sales. The following is the official range of prices issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association:
