Chch men successful

Driving rain and gale-force winds failed to stop two Christchurch men in their ambition io be part of the first team to run the northern circuit of Stewart Island. The team of four Christchurch and Invercargill runners completed the 125 km track yesterday with an official time of two days. 20 hours and 51 minutes. A fifth Christchurch man. Mr Barry Finch, was forced to pull out oh the second morning with a knee injury.

Mr Rud Rutherford, aged 39 years, of Christchurch, said that the route which included Mason Bay had been extremely rough and steep, climbing from sea level to 460 m. At times the weather deteriorated into rain and strong winds. “I don't want to see mud again for weeks." he said. Most people walked the track in seven to eight days but apparently only one or two individuals had run the route. The other Christchurch team member was Mr Don Cameron.
