Top rowers meet
Two of New Zealand's leading, premier club rowing eights. Avon and Wairau. will meet again this week-end in the Lion Breweries regatta at Kerrs Reach. The eights final has been deliberately scheduled for the middle of the programme on Sunday when the water is at its best. '
Last month Avon won the first clash by three-quarters of a length, but the Wairau eight (already boating two internationals) has now been strengthened by the inclusion of the 1980 "Olympic" representative. Tony Brook, back from overseas. Avon's coach. David Lindstrom, intent on regaining the national eight-oared title at Lake Waihola in March, has settled on his final crew after a Christmas training camp on the Wairau River.
Among the two newcomers in the crew is the 203 cm Don
Symon. a uounie international (rowing and rugby) al the colts level during 1981. who will fill the No. 3 seat. Another member of the New Zealand Colts eight. Simon Aplin, will plumb his frame down in No.- 4 seat. The full crew is Steve Donaldson (stroke). Les O'Connell. George Keys, Mark Meates. Aplin. Symon. Derek Manning. Gerry Dwyer, and Andrew Graham (coxswain). Five crews (Avon 2. Wairau 2. and Otago) have entered the premier eights this week-end with the total entries of 205 from 11 clubs 45 up on last year's inaugural Lion regatta.’ also organised by the Canterburv chib
