The South Island Modified Sportsman saloon car champion. Mike Allan, won all three races in his class at the Woodford Glen Speedway on Saturday. Allan, making a return after being forced out of the recent New Zealand championships with mechanical problems, got the better of what might have been a close match with the three-times national champion and runner-up in this year's event. Glen Free. Allan started behind Free but quickly passed him and went to the lead. Free followed but could not get near him. Allan went on to score a comfortable win. In the second race Free had the misfortune to hit the safety fence in his Corvette, breaking a stub axle which put him out for the remainder of the meeting. The saloon car feature raced over twelve laps saw Doug Smith, in his Chew Monza, come through from the rear of the field to win. Colin Cameron in an Escort started from the pole position, and led from the start until he was overtaken by Smith on the last lap. Last season's four-cylinder saloon champion. Phil Brain, scored his first win of this season when in a borrowed car he won the 3ZB race for four-cylinder cars.
Brain had built up a new turbo-charged Ford Capri racer for this season but mechanical
problems have plagued the car in every race it had run Results - Super saloons: "The Star" race. D. Smith 1. K. Bull 2. W. Leech 3. 3ZM race: Leech 1. 1. Shrimpton 2. Smith 3. Hertz Rentals race: J.
