Lamb values match earlier rates

The demand for all types of store lambs remained’ verystrong at Addington market yesterday. Some auctioneers predicted a downturn in the market because of recent dry weather, but values yesterday matched the rates paid at the ore-Christmas sales. Good lambs again attracted most attention. Buyers were obviously prepared to pay for quality and were confident there was still a profit margin to be made with lambs which were selling for more than $l5. The strongest competition was for the smaller lots offered later in the sale. The best lambs were in the $14.60 to $17.20 bracket. But the bulk of the yarding sold between $11.30 and $15.50. Perendales were mainly between $11.90 and $15.30, Romneys $12.30 to $l6. and Corriedales $10.60 to $14.30. Black-faced lambs were very easy to sell. Very little premium was offered for ewe lambs. Unless they had definite breeding potential ewe lambs sold on a par with wether lambs and were sometimes slightly cheaper.

A small yarding of adult sheep created little interest among buyers. Many of the ewes were in light condition and sold between $3 and $B. A line of Border-Romney twotooths sold for $23. The organisation of the sale has been changed slightly by stock firms. Pens with less than 40 head are being sold separately from the main sale. The yardings were 7735 lambs (17,749 at the previous sale) and 1010 adults (3181). Sales of store sheep included:— Wether lambs: Strathmore Enterprises (Holmes Bay), 327 Perendales at $ll.lO to $15.30; E. R. S. Johnstone (Russells Flat). 237 Romneys at $14.60 to $17.20; A. B.
