Taxation
Sir,—Human ingenuity is such that when tax becomes too high and threatens livelihood, people will find ways to avoid it. Tax deductible or nontaxable expenses and fringe benefits are obviously an attractive way to avoid crippling tax, and it is no wonder so many are taking advantage of them. But in handling this problem, the Task Force has suggested the usual Government approach, not to spread the tax burden to make it easier to pay, but just to add more tax in an effort to suppress avoidance. I am amazed at the cheek of Government hacks for even suggesting such ridiculous proposals. But when they are faced with apparent lack of interest in the turnover tax system, which would properly solve these problems, what can we expect? Turnover tax has the broad base that people are demanding, as well as a massive reduction in the rate of tax on income.—Yours, etc.,
