The Victorian state Government, is. running a nineweek free-trayel experiment over the Christmas period to try to encourage the habit of travelling on public transport.
The scheme is expected to cost $A500,000, but it is hoped it will begin a 20 per cent rise in patronage. It is modelled on other overseas trials that produced rises-of similar scale.
The Victorian Government will pay 5A27.000 to' private bus companies to-help them run Sunday services during the trial. The scheme will run on Sundays only, from December 6 to January 31, and apply to all trains, trams, and buses in the metropolitan area. .Announcing the plan, the State Premier, Mr L. Thompson, said, “The aim is to get more people, especially families, into the habit of using public transport.”
