Radio link helps train service
PA Wellington The. Railways Department is running a trial radio communications system between a Christchurch control and trains on the Christchurch to Picton line. The man who developed the pilot system, a senior Railways engineering officer, Mr Bill Barnes, said it had been in use since September and a decision would be made after the end of the trial period in February on whether to extend it to other lines.
The radio system, which Mr Barnes said had reduced, the number of train delays, appeared to work just as expected, he said. He said that a train could be delayed if a driver had to leave it to telephone the control, but the new system was giving direct communication on 98 per cent of the. trial line. Also, direct radio communication between trains also helped to ease traffic flows by the precise tracking of trains, especially at crossover points. ,
