Govt accepts tender for big rail ferry
PA Wellington The Government has accepted the tender of a Danish company, Aalborg Vaefrt, to build" a new Cook Strait rail ferry. Announcing this, the Minister of Railways (Mr Gair) said the ferry, to replace the Aramoana, would be built at a present day cost of about $45 million and was expected to enter service at the end of 1983. At 146 metres long and 20 metres wide the new ship
will be considerably bigger than the Aramoana and slightly bigger than the Aratika. “The new ship, with a displacement of 8500 tonnes, will have capacity for 1000 passengers and 60 railway waggons or 130 cars on the rail deck and 100 cars or equivalent on the vehicle deck,” Mr Gair said. International interest in the tender had been very keen, with acceptable tenders submitted, Mr Gair said
