Otago swimmer wins
PA Auckland Philip Rush, of Otago, won the Bay of Islands longdistance swimming race on Saturday and is keen to take on the world champion, Claudio Plit next month. Only eight minutes behind him in the Endurance Swimming Society 13km event was an Aucklander, Graham Faulkner, who is making a serious return to long-dis-tance swimming after a twoyear break. Kim De Moor, also of Auckland, was third and the
promising young Canterbury competitor, Elizabeth Horner, was fourth and the first woman home. Belinda Shields, of Auckland, twice conqueror of the English Channel, was fifth after having boat problems. The contest was swum in a 15 to 20-knot easterly, which made conditions testing for the 110 competitors. Plit, an Argentinian, will arrive in Auckland on January 12, and compete in the. society’s second race, in. Dunedin oh January 23.
