Winner close to record
A hill-running specialist, John Hellemans (New Brighton) came close to breaking the seven-year-old record for the annual King of the Mountains road : race when he won the event convincingly on Saturday. It was Hellemans' first attempt at the run. from the Sign of the Takahe to the Sugarloaf transmitter and return, but he ran it confidently, sharing the early pace with the St Martins marathon specialist, Brenton Joyce and maintaining it when Joyce weakened about halfwayup the hill. Hellemans went on to win in 36min 335. The record of 36:10 was set by Roger Robinson (University) in 1974. Joyce -hung on for second in 38:23, hotly pursued by Andrew Goy (Toe H) and Mike Johnstone (University). Margaret Flanagan (Olympic) won the women’s race in 47:32, a minute ahead of second-placed Lilly Mead (Technical). Canterbury's marthon women's champion. Vai Lindsay (Technical) was third, followed by the first women’s veteran, Diane Stead (Technical). Miss Flanagan was first to the summit and held her margin going down the hill. About 85 runners took part in the race in warm, blustery conditions.
