Kaiapoi could quit scheme

The Kaiapoi Borough Council might not pay the $20,000 demanded of it by the Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee. The council told the committee that it was withdrawing from the refuse scheme “because of the probable decision that the northern transfer station will not be proceeded with.’’

“Without the northern station the scheme was not of much use of Kaiapoi,” said the Mayor of Kaiapoi, Mr H. W. Cumberland.

The committee has approved Kaiapoi’s withdrawal but has insisted under the terms of its constitution, that the council give 12 months notice and pay a year’s subscription before withdrawing. The Kaiapoi council has advised the committee that it will not put any more money into the scheme because" the terms of the origi-

nal contract (the northern transfer station) have not been fulfilled.

The council is seeking legal advice.

“We will wait for the Refuse Committee to say officially that we have to pay it and we will take it from there," Mr Cumberland said.

“We have got the money. It depends whether we pay it over,” he said. In the meantime, Kaiapoi would continue to attend Refuse Committee meetings but would play a passive role, Mr Cumberland said. As for the disposal of its rubbish, Kaiapoi would seek its salvation outside the metropolitan scheme, Mr Cumberland said.

“We have good neighbours in the counties and Rangiora Borough and our salvation may be there in preference to going south of the Waimakariri River," he said.
