Postal staff 'happy’ with conditions

Staff at the new Postal Centre in Christchurch are reported to be “Very happy” about this year’s Christmas mail rush because their working conditions are much better than they were last Christmas. The postal services manager, Mr L. Tredinnick, said that the conditions were “really good,” as was the air conditioning. Last year, the older Chief Post Office and adjacent buildings were still used as postal headquarters. Mr Tredinnick said, “There is less lifting to be done for the second-class mail because of the conveyer belts.” . Last week a million letter items had passed through the Postal Centre, which was comparable with the volume of mail at the corresponding time last year. The volume of second-class mail was also increasing but a big build-up of that mail was not expected until the middle of next week.
