Double tennis mission
PA Auckland Jeff Simpson, of Auckland, will double as a recruiting officer when he leaves New Zealand today to play three grand prix tennis tournaments in Australia. The 31-year-old former New Zealand Davis Cup player, back home from the United States on Monday, has rested two days before attempting to qualify for events in New South Wales, Melbourne and Adelaide.
The Benson and Hedges Open tournament director, Peter Gardner, aware of the respect Simpson commands among fellow professionals, has enlisted his services to entice several highly ranked players to Stanley St for the $105,000 January 11 to 17 event. Simpson is now ranked 212 in the world (159 in doubles) after another successful season playing the demanding Penn Satelite circuit in America.
