Excellent win for Duncan

Chris Duncan (Canterbury), a recent New Zealand representative, and Dale Maher (Union), provided one of the feature battles in the Canterbury Rowing Association’s second pennant regatta at Kerfs Reach at the week-end. ’

The pair met in the lightweight single sculls for the second time in recent weeks. On Sunday Duncan was a comfortable winner, but Maher will have a chance for revenge at Lake Forsyth in two weeks. The regatta was rowed in perfect conditions with 158 crews from Marlborough, South Canterbury as well as Canterbury, competing. In the junior eights Christ’s College again showed its fine early season form, but the Avon crew, comprising schoolboys from St Andrew’s, caught the eye with a bold sprint over the last 200 m that lifted it to second place by 0.45. In the premier fours, a strong Wairau combination stroked by the former Waikato and New Zealand stroke, Mark James, led the two Avon combinations from start to finish.

The Premier singles was a row over for Avon, but the other events in the class were keenly contested. Two Avon crews and Wairau started in the. open eights. Avon II was not regarded as a threat with their stroke, Jim Elliott, competing in his seventh event of the day. From the gun Avon I and Wairau cleared out with Wairau rating 42 strokes a minute. There was nothing separating the crews-at the 500 m mark; but after 1000 m, Avon I, stroked by Steve Donaldson, had pulled ahead of Wairau. Avon I maintained the pressure and drew away over the final 500 m to finish two lengths clear. The time was a good one in the tidal conditions — smin 40.45. Final points from the two day regatta were: Avon 56, Canterbury 41, Christ’s College 13, Union 18, Timaru 5. Results of finals:
