Stable-hand hurt
A young stable-hand is seriously ill in the intensive care unit at Christchurch Hospital after his horse cannoned into a poplar tree at Riccarton racecourse on Saturday morning. He is Richard James Wirepa. aged 16. of Wellington. who suffered severe head and arm injuries. The injured youth had been taken on only last week by the Riccarton trainer, Bevan Laming, after he had
advertised for work in a racing stable. The accident occurred about 7 a.m. when Midknight apparently galloped into one of three poplar trees outside the track at Riccarton. It is believed that the trees, which featured in a similar accident involving a young woman rider two years ago. will be removed. Midknight had to be destroyed after Saturday’s accident. The Lord Sasanof nine-year-old gelding had won eight races.
