Good surf win for Egnot
Tom Egnot from Sumner won the Canterbury board riding championships with a good display of controlled surfing at Gore Bay on Saturday. Egnot was pushed hard throughout the contest to beat a field of 50 who encountered glassy four foot waves. The top junior in the field, Richard Allan of New Brighton, did not catch the required number of sizeable waves and had to be content with second place. Another New Brighton surfer, Paul Bennet, suffered the same fate and finished third. The competition was held over two week-ends. The eliminations were run at New Brighton a week ago. Saturday’s contest, and several others in the last two months will be used to select a team for the 1982 New Zealand surf riding championships at Mount Maunganui next month. For first Egnot received a digital watch and $3O. Allan won $5O for finishing second and $2O for being the top junior. Final results were: Egnot 1. Allan 2, Bennett 3, Julian Petersen 4, Milford Burnside 5. Wayne Neilson 6. Len Carragher. The contest was hosted by the New Brighton club as an amateur event, with the entry lees being compiled to make up the prize money.
