Brothers dominate decathlon
The McKee brothers dominated the first Canterbury contest of the season, which ended after two days at Queen Elizabeth If Park yesterday. Kieran McKee (Toe H), better known as the New Zealand pole vault champion, won the event with a score of 6473. He was in front all the way. Second place'went to Derek McKee (Toe H), who finished with 6030. and third place went to Stephen McKee (Toe H), with 5530. The first women's heptathlon held in Canterbury was an anticlimax. Karen Forbes (Old Boys), who represented New Zealand in this event at the Brisbane miniGames, pulled out after two events. A bruised heel, suffered in training a few days earlier, proved too painful. Her main bid for a Commonwealth Games qualifying score will now be in the contest between Australia and New Zealand of February 20 and 21. This left Lyn Aben (Technical) to continue bn her own in the remaining five events. She did this, in spite of the absence of competition, and recorded the worthy score of 4977 points. This now stands as a Canterbury best performance, although Miss Forbe's tally of 5267 in Brisbane is the best by a Canterbury athlete.
