Southland runners take top placings
PA Invercargill Southland form runners took the main placings in the second leg of the five-series 10,000 metre Big M-sponsored road race in Invercargill on Saturday. Murray Fleming, of the Invercargill Athletics Club. won. More than 200 runners, took part in the various categories, including registered and unregistered athletes, veterans, women's and under 16. The conditions, overcast and mild, were good for the race, which carried prize money of $l6OO and was run on a circuit through Invercargill's streets.
Fleming and Guy Turner (St Paul's) set a fast pace from the start and left the well-performed Dave Askin (Invercargill) trailing in third place in the second lap of the run. Fleming pushed hard in his duel with Turner arid won in a time of 30min 55s with Turner second in 31min 2s. Askin took third place in 31min 21s.
