New arts centre given to college

St Andrew’s College will get a new fine-arts centre. The centre, which will cost between $BO,OOO and $lOO,OOO, will be an anonymous gift from a Christchurch couple who have boys at the college. The gift was announced in the college’s sixty-fifth annual report by the college’s rector, Mr lan Galloway. The centre is expected to be completed by the end of next term to coincide with Mr Galloway's retirement. He will be succeeded by Dr John Rentoul, who is now the assistant headmaster of Knox Grammar School. Wahroonga, Sydney. The new centre will also

mark the completion of a big building programme at the college, including a $350,000 extension to the existing arts block, the renovation of the college's historic Strowan House, the modernisation of two science laboratories, roading improvements, and additions to the squash club. Mr Galloway said that more than $BOO,OOO had been raised for the work, other than the building of the new arts centre, through an appeal to parents, old boys, and friends of the college. Money was still being received. The new arts centre will be built at the head of the Strowan Stream.
