New ambassador to Germany
PA Wellington The Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Taiboys) has announced the appointment of Mr Jack Shepherd as New Zealand's next Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany.
Mr Shepherd, who is now Assistant Secretary of Foreign Affairs, will succeed Mr B. F. Bolt and will take up his duties in Bonn in April, 1982. Mr Shepherd will also be responsible for New Zealand's diplomatic relations with Switzerland. Mr Taiboys said, “The Federal Republic of Germany is a valuable source of investment and loan capital and technical skills, and activities under our scientific and technological agreement are expanding.
“On the trade side, the Federal Republic of Germany is now our fifth largest over-all trading partner and our eighth largest export market, taking $133 million worth of our exports in the year ended June, 1981.” Mr Shepherd has twice headed the Ministry's Economic Division and in 1972-73 was Director of External Aid. He has served in Australia, where he was Acting High Commissioner in 196364, in Singapore, and in Washington, where he was Minister and Deputy Head of Mission from 1966 to 1970. From 1973 to 1976,. Mr Shepherd was High Commissioner to Canada. His last overseas appointment before taking up his present position in 1979 was as High Commissioner to Malaysia.
