Packaging report released
In an attempt to help reduce accidental poisonings among pre-school children, the Standards Association of New Zealand has released the first part of a new draft standard on child-resistant packaging. The standard is designed to assess the effectiveness of packages said to be unopenable by children of four years and under. A recent Christchurch Clinical School of Medicine survey found that 17 per cent of all accidents among preschool children were from poisoning. Drugs involved more than half of these accidents. Part one of the standard deals with reclosable packages and a second part will deal with non-reclosable packages. The second part of the draft will not be finished until further information is received on work being done on non-reclosable packages.
