‘Think big’
Sir,—This political fantasyshould be altered to meet conditions in the real world where the industrial giants are making such a mess not only of their economies, but also of world peace. Stimulation of fear by the United States and U.S.S.R. Governments, to which the French and British also subscribe, is, in part, a device to sustain their economies through vast and increasing sales of arms. The world is now an arsenal. Discipline in an arsenal has to be meticulous, or some fool will blow it up. Arnold Toynbee described world society as pandemonium — a state that ensures that a blow-up involving nuclear weapons is only a matter of time. Since survival should be our main aim, we should be concentrating upon indigenous self-sufficiency in New Zealand — in itself a' cure for unemployment. Industrial adventures in a world society that may never see 1984. let alone
1990. have just that much future.—Yours, etc.. J. E. RYAN. November 17, 1981.
