Shipping news British seamen to strike
P and 0 line ships throughout the world are expected to be hit by a British seamen’s strike today. Union officials in England issued the strike call earlier this week in support of 150 seamen attempting to re-open the Liverpool to Belfast ferry service, which was closed last week. The dispute could spread to the rest of Britain's merchant fleet. Unionists from Britain’s 18 major ports met in Liverpool to plan to landlock company ships in port today. Other ships owned by P and O or its subsidiaries will be hit when they reach their next port of call. There are no P and O ships in Lyttelton today. A spokesman for the company in Christchurch said tlat he did not think that the strike would have any effect in New Zealand because no ships were due.'
