Board joins free trade groups

The Lyttelton Harbour Board has joined the New Zealand-China Free Trade Association. The board learnt yesterday that its application to join the association has been approved. “I am pleased that we have this’membership,” said the board’s chairman. Mr J. E. Mannering, at a meeting of the port development committee yesterday. “It is well worth while. Trade with China is becoming much more for New Zealand. They are taking more of our wool.” he said. That increase in trade prompted the board to join the association, which has several objects, including strengthening trade relations between the two countries.

A’ ship in port at present, the Diana Skou, is loading wool for China. Catamaran hire A catamaran hire service will be established at Chatteris Bay, with the approval of the Harbour Board. The manager of Rent A Cat, Ltd, Mr B. Ward, of Methven, wrote to the board seeking approval to run the service. Three 12ft and one 14ft catamarans will be hired, to persons 16 or older. Each hirer will be required to wear a lifejacket which will be supplied with the .craft. According to Mr Ward, catamaran hire is popular in Australia and in the North Island. The Lyttelton Harbourmaster, Captain J. A. Barbour, said that the bay would be ideal for that use. Several members of the committee asked that North Island catamaran hire centres be approached to see what safety provisions were made.
