Women’s softball team
Canterbury will have a team rich in experience when it endeavours to win the Rothmans Trophy at the national women’s softball tournament in Invercargill from January 3 to 9. The leading trio in the team are Cheryl Kemp, Penny Salton and Robyn Storer, all New Zealand representatives, and they will be backed by other experienced provincial players, Sharon Constable, Chris Tew and Penney Dunckley.
Canterbury has not won the national tournament since 1965 and it will have a valuable warm-up against Hutt Valley and Wellington on December 5 and 6 when it will play four matches. The team announced last evening by the selectors, Jim Gibson and Lyndsay Leask, is: Tew (captain), Salton (vice-captain), Lynda O'Cain, Kemp, Natalie Hazelwood. Constable (Albion); Storer, Linda Manning, Anthea Reaver, Jane Earnshaw, Dunkley (Burnside); Philippa McLean, Margaret Machirus (Monowai); Airini Caddick (Papanui).
