Stormy Morn looks set to win Dominion Handicap

By

G. K. Yule

Stormy Morn, the only son of the few North Islandtrained horses competing at the meeting to have been successful so far, looks set to add the Dominion Handicap to his splendid record on the final night of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s cup carnival on Saturday. Owned at Marshland by Mr Peter Moore, Stormy Morn is trained at Pukekohe •>y another former southirner in Tony Perucich. The ombination recorded a magdficent trial for the Dominion Handicap when they were successful in national record time in the Trotting Free-For-All last Friday. Stormy Morn was forced over much extra ground and he had to call on all of his reserves of stamina to come out on top. He was runner-up to Scotch Tar in this race 12 months ago when'trained byTrevor Thomas. The chances of a North Island success will be heightened by Kenwood Song and Jenner, members of the team, trained at Cambridge by Charlie Hunter and Gary Smith. Hunter has already driven’ Min Scott (1963) and French Pass (1967) to victory in the Dominion Handicap and he

will handle Jenner, a four-year-old and by far the youngest horse in Saturday's field. But it is Kenwood Song which could be the better prospect. He has a grand record as a stayer and his two races so far at the meeting, resulting in a second and a fourth, should have brought him to a high peak of fitness. The best of the southern horses could be Game Way, winner of the Worthy Queen Handicap last week at his lone start for the season. He dead-heated for third in the Dominion Handicap last year. Game Way, a difficult horse to keep sound, is trained by Alex Purdon, who won the race with Annual Report in 1959. The field has dropped to 11 starters as a result of the defections of Thriller Dee, a dismal failure , earlier at the meeting, Special Pride, which has broken down, and Sir Castleton, which has had to be put aside because of a viral'infection. ' About Now and McShane are capable, of adding interest to the finish, while old Sure Mart could be, a danger after two sterling efforts so far at the meeting. However, they will all need luck to contend with

Stormy Morn and Kenwood Song. The Dominion Handicap and the Allan Matson Free-For-All form the legs of the T.A.B. double. The T.A.B. treble will be run on races five, seven and 10 and there will be T.A.B. quinellas on races two, six and 10. The on-course treble will be run on races one, three and four.
