N.Z. future

Sir,—The headlines (“The Press,” November 16) “Support for P.M. strong” and “Jewish centre desecrated” were a chilling reminder that contemporary New Zealand history is starting to read more and more like some near-future novel such as “Smith’s Dream” or one of the Quatermass stories. First, there is economic depression followed by an eventual acceptance of high inflation and unemployment. Next there is increasing support of “strong-man” politicians and hard-line government policies along with the emergence of ultra Right-wing pop philosophy in our community. Then, finally, the climate is right for deeply prejudiced, narrow-minded people to try to divert society’s simmering frustration and anger towards a favourite scapegoat - the Jewish people. I am no scaremonger, but I urge all good people: be ready to speak out and act against this emerging lunatic fringe. The Third Reich was only 40 years ago; it seems awfully possible that the same thing could be happening again. — Yours, etc., A. D. STROOBANT. November 16, 1981.
