Nuclear weapons
Sir,—The lead feature article by Ken Coates (“The Press,” November 14) was an excellent scenario of the unthinkable horrifying results of a nuclear war. I think that it should be compulsory reading for all. Reading this sobers one up to the stark realities of the insane arms race. It is as if man is “hell bent” on destroying himself and his (as yet) only habitable planet. Surely there is no greater priority for man’s survival than an immediate world-wide stand against this sinister development. Over the last few months there has been some encouraging mass anti-nuclear demonstrations, throughout European cities — rather reminiscent of the sixties. Under a new leader. Greece is determined to rid itself of all nuclear weapons. The Governor of California is leading the way for his state to become nuclear free — just two of other shining examples of a humane and courageous stand. I believe it is imperative that New Zealand leads the way towards a nuclear-free South Pacific and becomes a neutral country.— Yours, etc., N. G. WARD. November 15, 1981.
