New Zealand Electricity A division of the Ministry of Energy PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERING CAREERS THE ELECTRICTY DIVISION of the Ministry of Energy is a large and complex electric power generation, transmission and supply authority. There are vacancies for professional, electrical and mechanical engineers (and occasionally chemical and civil engineers) who have completed their degree requirements. Suitable applicants with or without post graduate work experience in engineering or allied fields will be taken on at District level centred at Palmerston North (but including New Plymouth Power Station). Training will be provided comprising induction, familiarisation and advanced training towards professional registration for those not already registered as engineer. This can extend over 4 years. The training covers the areas of hydro and modern thermal power stations, sub-stations and transmission system maintenance and operation as well as design and construction in these fields. During these periods, the responsibility carried by the trainee engineer is progressively increased and at a final stage the trainee is given full local responsibility for a construction project where he often has the opportunity of co-ordinating design work, draughting, job planning, staff control, construction and installation, testing and final commissioning. The latter part of tis raining, which is monitored via th NZ Institute of Engineers must be spent in our Head Office in Wellington.
