Pleasing Guineas trial

Weinmeister, a Riccartontrained hopeful for the Southland Guineas next Tuesday, sprinted strongly in training on his home track yesterday. He will be taken south tomorrow by Chris Mol, who trains him in partnership with Peter Jones. Weinmeister had no luck in the running when taken south for the Gore Guineas last month, but he has won twice in the meantime, and in his solo sprint yesterday he showed he had trained on

since his victory in the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Stonyhurst Handicap last week. All the other gallops yesterday were done righthanded to cater for horses engaged at the Westland meeting. Weinmeister, one of the earliest workers, sprinted 1200 m on the plough in Imin 18s, the last 600 m in 35.25. Later, the Hokitika bound Pennianne and Ernest sprinted 1200 m on terms in

Imin 21.25, quickening for the final 600 m in 38.45. Pennianne is a talented galloper on rain-affected tracks, and if she has footing to suit her she will take beating in the Miss Scenicland Stakes on Saturday. Pompous Prince and Photo Copy returned Imin 18s for their 1200 m, and 38s for the last 600 m. Brutus followed in Imin 21s, the final 600 m in-40.45. He has been struggling to regain his best form this season, but anything like one

of his peak efforts would make him a formidable contender for the 1200 m sprint at Hokitika on Saturday. The Crofter, a winner for the Maurice Thornley stable at the New Zealand Cup meeting, was never near full stretch while running 800 m in 53.45. It is planned to race him next at Trentham next week. Haddock and Haughty Look, runners for the Thistoll stable at Hokitika, sprinted 600 m in 39.65.
