Koiro Trelay to return
PA Wellington Koiro Trelay is returning to New Zealand after failures in the Melbourne Cup and Sandown Cup. His trainer Eric Temperton confirmed earlier this week that Koiro Trelay is expected to be flown home from Melbourne to Auckland today along with fellow Central Districts gallopers. Langeland and Shamrock. After the Melbourne Cup. Koiro Trelay entered the stable of Tommy Hughes who was to prepare him for the Sandown Cup and the Perth Cup on New Year’s Day. However, through an oversight Koiro Trelay’s Perth Cup mission had to be scrapped. His connections missed the nominations.
‘‘They closed months ago,” said Templeton, “but we were not aware of this when I was in Melbourne.”
Temperton heard from Hughes on Sunday and reported that once again, Koiro Trelay raced too keenly for his own good in the Sandown Cup. The horse never settled at any stage for Midge Didham who had great difficulty holding the grey entire. “Hughes said he was disappointed. The horse ripped into his work again and’that he had lightened up appreciable after the race,” said Temperton. “I’ll put him out for a fortnight when he gets home and see what he’s like after I bring him back. If I’m satisfied with him I’ll set him for the Wellington Cup again.” Koiro Trelay’s American owner, Mr Dave Canning has been in New Zealand since the Melbourne Cup and was due to return to the United States yesterday. Shamrock is to be spelled and brought back for a tilt at the George Adams at Wellington, while the connections of Langeland are undecided about the six-year-old’s immediate future.
