Widnes has first loss
Widnes, which last week equalled the record of 11 consecutive championship victories from the start of a season, suffered its first loss of the British rugby league programme on Sunday. It was beaten, 9-8, by Hull Kingston Rovers in a quarterfinal of the John Player Trophy tournament. Two second division clubs, Oldham and Swinton, also qualified for the semi-finals by eliminating Leeds and Salford, respectively. The other quarter-final, still ’to be played, is between Hull and Barrow. A feature of the championship matches was the continued success of the new clubs, Carlisle United and Cardiff Blue Dragons, in their first year in second division. Carlisle, especially, is well placed to emulate Fulham and gain promotion in its debut season. Results.— John Player Trophy quarterfinals: Oldham 14, Leeds 5: Salford 0. Swinton 6; Widnes 8.
