Format unchanged
The Hertz soccer league format will be unchanged next year. The competition will continue on a zone basis but the next season, 1983, will revert to a regional league. “It was inevitable that the league would revert to a regional format. It is needed to help lift the standard of soccer in the South'lsland,” said the secretary of the southern region council (Mr T. Gottermeyer) yesterday.
“Southern clubs find it hard to match their northern counterparts so they need the strongest competition they can get. We want to ensure we have at least three South Island teams in the Rothmans national league,” said Mr Gottermeyer. The regional council agreed that Timaru United, a team comprising players from South Canterbury clubs, be permitted to play in the zone league next year.
