Planet Earth
Early man explained the creation of the Earth and all its natural occurrences through stories called myths and legends. According to the ancient Greeks, volcanoes erupted because Hephaestus, the blacksmith god of the underworld, was lighting his forge. Hindu legends said that the Earth rested on a golden plate, supported on the backs of elephants. In turn, the elephants stood on a giant
turtle, which represented the god Vishnu. Earthquakes were thought to occur when 'W the elephants moved. But as time progressed, people started to stuay the , Earth in order to find out how it was formed. The artist -and inventor, Leonardo da Vinci, was one of the first people to study . rocks in an effort to find out the age of the Earth and just y? how it was formed. Today, the study of the Earth is called geology.
