Spectacular derailment blocks line

PA Wellington A spectacular goods train derailment just north of Otaki. where bouncing waggons ripped up more than 40 metres of track, blocked the North Island main trunk line on Sunday evening and yesterday. The goods train, which left Wellington just after 7 p.m.. was derailed at Manakau, 10 kilometres north of Otaki at 10.10 p.m. Thirteen waggons were derailed, reducing sleepers to matchwood. Clearing started at 11 p.m. on Sunday and more than 60 men worked all yesterday. Sunday's Northerner express from Auckland was diverted through the Manawatu Gorge and the Wairarapa to Wellington — adding an hour to the journey.

The line was cleared soon after 9 p.m. yesterday. 23 hours after its closing.

The south-bound Silver Fern, at 9.30. was the first train over the track w'hich had been damaged by the derailment. The railcar was four hours behind schedule, after having been held at Levin., \ The south-bound Northerner followed close behind, and at 10 p.m. a Northerner which had left Wellington at 7.30 p.m. went over the affected track.
