Gary Player wins golf classic
NZPA Tweed Heads, N.S.W. South Africa’s Gary Player fired a final round of 67 for a four-stroke. win in the $lOO,OOO Tooth golf classic at Tweed Heads yesterday. Player finished with a 72hole total of .275 after rounds of 65, 71, 72 and 67 to collect the $lB,OOO first prize. The defending champion, Bob Shearer, stormed home with a 67 to take second place on 279 with rounds of 68, .70, 74 and 67, one stroke ahead of Wayne Grady and
the overnight leader, Jack Newton. Newton lost second place when he bogeyed two of the last three holes for a final round of 73 after earlier rounds of 67, 66 and 74. Grady shot a five-under 67 yesterday to share third place with Newton after his earlier rounds of 66, 74 and 73. Greg Norman was next in, with a final round of 66 on top of earlier rounds of 70, 68 and 78.
