Activities of S.P.U.C.
Sir,—So S.P.U.C. is at it again. It should get top marks for pressure group tactics. Mulholland, “Introduction to the Legal System,” page 3 states: "The Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion Act, 1977, provides an example of conflict over legislation being carried to an extreme extent. The conflict surrounding that legislation was accorded very substantial articulation by the news media with the result that the most in publicity was given to any statement or action of significance. Within a few months of the passing of the bill demands arose for its repeal. If conflict of this intensity accompanied the passing of any significant number of bills the stability of the legislative and judicial process could be upset.” S.P.U.C. should inform the public the number of its financial members in relation to the total population, the method used to obtain data and statistics, and whether S.P.U.C. intends once again to upset the stability of the judicial and legislative process of our democracy. — Yours, etc.,
ALICE CUTLER. November 9, 1981.
