Alcohol
Sir,—Considering that alcohol is responsible for approximately half the fatal road accidents; approximately 22 per cent of all serious road accident injuries; for approximately half adult male deaths by drowning; for occupation of an least one-fifth of hospital beds; for between 70 per cent and 80 per cent of crimes of violence and dishonesty; for two in every five divorces and separation; for approximately 50,000 addicted alcoholics and 100,000 hazardous drinkers; for one in five cases of battered children; and an excess of $lOO million as the cost of absenteeism to industry per year, we see alcohol consumption as our country’s number one drug problem. With outlets increased from ’2012 in 1970 to 3813 in 1980 and with “fast track” legislation which allows no time for objections being organised to liberalising of dis-
tribution, we feel New Zealand is on the road to physical and moral self-destruction. (References on accompanying sheet.) — Yours, etc., E. OAKLEY. November 9, 1981.
