Artist’s leap forward

Exhibition Sculpture, by Eddie Sunderland. At Peepers Gallerv, until November 26. Reviewed by David Brokenshire. It is interesting when an artist obviously makes a leap forward in his work. Such is the case in this exhibition by Eddie Sunderland. Five of his earlier pieces are displayed, together with seven of his latest works. The older sculptures are only of moderate interest compared with the new. At once a maturity and confidence in presentation is apparent. “Cruciform” is a set of rugby goal posts set in grass but complete with barbed wire and chains. It is not a pleasant object but it certainly is powerful and as a symbol has great poignancy. “Inside-out” is an old window sash mounted in a frame. Looking through the window is a fence and barbed wire. Stencilled in the upper panes is the Maori “ake ake” — for ever and ever. One is left with the question, Who is imprisoned? I feel that this artist shows considerable potential and look forward to seeing more of his work.
