Labour Party policy

Sir,—The Labour Party’s policy on consumer affairs recently released by the Lyttelton member of Parliament, Ann Hercus, is one of the most progressive and long-needed of the programmes to be implemented by the iminent Labour government. The commitment to establish a ministry of consumer affairs (hopefully with Mrs Hercus as its minister) is the only realistic commitment to consumer protection offered by any of the political parties at this election. For too long has the ever-suffering consumer had to put up with stamp form contracts unfairly favouring the vendor-lender, deceptive packaging, misleading advertising, worthless guarantees, warranty avoidance devices, and most of all an unbridled and often unjustified level of price raising now at epidemic proportions. The time has come for the imposition of some discipline in these areas and Mrs Hercus is just the person to see to it.—Yours, etc.,

D. J. O’ROURKE. October 30, 1981.
