New beacons . for port

Lyttelton harbour will soon be equipped with two of the most modern navigation beacons available. They will be placed at Governors Bay and on Ripapa Island to mark the channel and to function as port approach beacons.

The powerful projector lanterns, developed by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, project the image of a glass slide in focus on to the bridge of an approaching vessel in three narrow beams so sharply defined that the separate colours of the lanterns can be seen .by moving sideways as little as 1 metre even though the beacon may be several kilometres away. . The Governors Bay light will have three sections, red, white, and green, which will oscillate to sweep across the channel. The Ripapa Island beacon will be stationary and will guide ships along the dredged channel to the port entrance. The beacons will work in daylight as well as darkness, in all weather conditions,, and can be adjusted in intensity from the signal tower. While no definite installation dates have been set, a Harbour Board spokesman said both beacons would be in use before the end of this year.
