Saving animals

Sir,—As one who watches the many television programmes I commend Mrs Betty Prescott for her efforts to persuade people that the need to save some animals from extinction is imperative (October 28). Recently “The Press" made a worthwhile effort to press home the desirability of citizens contributing towards a better environment by planting trees to attract birds and bring back the joyous dawn chorus on spring mornings. It is a miracle that even the much depleted song chorus still exists. This leads one to another facet of help needed to bring about the retention of our song birds with the unequal forces of nature in cities. After many heart-rending examples of the bird songs being rudely cut short by the robbing of their nests, I query the need to tranquillise cats who fear fireworks. No cat is allowed in the Queen’s bird sanctuary — Buckingham Palace. — Yours, etc., .
