Four days work

Sir,—Mr Blue Kennedy’s claim that the Government’s opposition to the five days pay for four days work in his agreement with Borthwicks was to appease the rural rump of the electorate is simplistic. Not only farmers but consumers also would pay dearly for such a gross imposition. For many years freezing workers have been paid a full year’s income for their work during the killing season. When the works are closed they obtain other employment or receive the unemployment benefit. Now they want another 52 days a year off for the same pay. The country cannot afford to adopt the five days pay for four days work nationally and any attempt by a powerful union to enforce this principle should be strongly resistedYours, etc., J. F. GARVEY.
