Teachers’ salaries
Sir,—ln reply to the letter from R. B. Johnson (October 24): The rate of $3B per day for a primary teacher is not mine. It is paid by the Education Board for a single day’s work when the normal teacher is sick. The $3B multiplied by five and then 52 gives an approximate annual salary of $lO,OOO. The strike call is for extra pay above the current average for a full-time teacher of $15,000. I am surprised that your correspondent is not very much more concerned about the 1200 primary teachers who will be unemployed next year. To highlight their problem, I invite unemployed teachers willing to teach in schools where teachers are on strike to telephone me (385-470). If sufficient volunteer, I will advise the Education Board who could decide if they are willing to employ the unemployed.— Yours, etc., RAY SPRING. October 27, 1981.
