Eel fishing rights

Sir,—Regarding commercial eel fishing around Lake Forsyth, I have had discussions over recent months with both the Minister for Fisheries and the member for Southern Maori. Judging by the decisive tone of the Minister’s letter to me, I see no new legislation for the lake unless there is a change of Minister or a change of Government. Mr Theo Bakker, commercial eel fisherman in Little River, recently approached me for private discussions on eeling. I thank him for his approach, for the friendly discussions, and for resolving certain isfeues. He has informed me his commercial eeling operation will in future be confined to Lake Ellesmere. Our Maori ancestors were always appreciative of a creator providing food from the lake, and taking only as much as - they needed.- I hope some of our Maori people today adoptthe same attitude.—Yours, etc., JOE KARETAI, Chairman, Ngati Irakehu Maori Committee.
