Taxation

Sir,—The trouble with catch-cries is that innocent people get caught. Do all those who are displaying Tax Reduction Integrity Movement carstikers really know what they are supporting? “Lower taxes through less government” is a very dangerous slogan, unless qualified by stating which government services are to be reduced. There is much Government spending that I cannot support, such as export subsidies to Fletcher Challenge, or dam construction to supply power for disastrous smelter proposals. Yet I suspect T.R.I.M. has in mind cuts in services that I, together with most people, consider essential. The National Government has already shown us, with for example, increased prices of bread and milk, and primary schools that lack basic equipment and maintenance, what such cuts mean, and the hardship they cause for those people already disadvantaged by our economic system. In this situation, “less government” is nothing but a recipe for increased poverty and injustice. — Yours, etc., A. S. WHITE. October 29, 1981.
